The Visual Archive of Kostas Asimis
we offer you our services

The photographic archive of Kostas Asimis constitutes a systematic and comprehensive record of historical and cultural heritage. The work assembles rare documentation from the mid-19th century to the modern era, organized into four primary thematic collections. The archive covers Orthodox monastic tradition, defensive fortress architecture, the natural wealth of Agio Oros, and the study of traditional folk art.

Historical Archive

The Historical Archive section focuses on the rescue and restoration of the priceless photographic treasure belonging to the St. Panteleimon Monastery in Agio Oros. It comprises over 5,000 restored ambrotypes and rare glass plates, with the earliest dating back to 1850. This archive serves as the only comprehensive visual testimony of Russian monasticism on Athos during the 19th century. Utilizing advanced digital restoration techniques, Kostas Asimis has brought back to light historical figures, significant visits, and rare moments of monastic history that were at risk of being lost forever due to the decay of time.

My Athos

The “My Athos” collection is the result of a continuous, forty-year photographic journey within Agio Oros. This work transcends simple depiction, offering a rare internal perspective on contemporary monastic life, worship traditions, and the daily reality of monks in the Athonite State. Special emphasis is placed on the unique natural environment of Agio Oros, where the rugged landscapes of the peninsula are documented in harmony with the architecture of the Holy Monasteries. From steep, untamed terrains to intricate botanical details, the collection captures the spiritual atmosphere of a place that remains untouched by time.

Russian Kremlins

The “Russian Kremlins” collection is an extensive architectural study of defensive fortification art. It includes detailed photographic documentation of 36 historic Kremlins and defensive complexes across Russia, including Novgorod, Pskov, Kazan, and Rostov. The works highlight the geometric precision, the strength of the walls, and the historical evolution of Russian architecture. The collection was awarded the Grand Prix at the “Divo Russia” festival, in recognition of the photographer’s scientific and artistic approach to documenting national defensive heritage.

Traditional Costumes

This section is dedicated to the systematic recording and promotion of traditional folk costumes from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Through collaboration with museums, collectors, and cultural institutions, Kostas Asimis documents the diversity and symbolism of authentic costumes from various regions. The collection is not limited to aesthetics; it functions as an archive for the preservation of national identity and folk art, showcasing the complexity of fabrics, embroideries, and jewelry that compose the cultural tradition of each locality.
