KOSTAS ASIMIS

The Beginning of a Journey
Kostas Asimis

Born on July 7, 1951, in Uzbekistan, Kostas Asimis is a distinguished photo artist whose creative destiny was forever altered by the spiritual aura of Agio Oros. For over 40 years, the Holy Mountain has remained the central theme of his life’s work. Today, as a citizen of the Russian Federation following the 2024 Presidential Decree, Asimis continues to bridge cultures through his lens, focusing on the sacred traditions of Agio Oros, the majestic Russian Kremlins, and the intricate heritage of traditional folk costumes.

His Mission in the Holy Land of Agio Oros

Kostas Asimis first set foot in Agio Oros in 1984. This first visit evolved into a monumental mission of historical preservation. For decades, he painstakingly gathered artifacts of Athonite history, most notably the unique ambrotypes (glass plate photographs) that were languishing in the old workshops of the peninsula.

His most profound achievement is the rescue and restoration of the priceless ancient photographic archive of the Russian St. Panteleimon Monastery in Agio Oros. Among these rarities is the legendary photograph depicting the miraculous appearance of the Most Holy Theotokos in tongues of flame during a distribution of bread to monks. To ensure these treasures endure, Asimis constructed a modern photo laboratory in Agio Oros with state-of-the-art restoration conditions. The collection now numbers over 5,000 items, dating back to 1850, making it the only comprehensive photographic record of Russian monasticism in Agio Oros.

Architectural Grandeur and Folk Traditions

Asimis’s artistic vision extends to the very heart of Russian identity. His international project, “On Guard of the Russian Land: Kremlins and Fortresses of Russia,” reflects years of travel across ancient cities. Capturing 36 defensive architectural sites—including Novgorod, Pskov, Kazan, and Zaraysk—the collection of over 140 works won the Grand Prix at the “Divo Russia” festival. This project utilizes modern multimedia and QR codes to engage younger generations with their history.

Furthermore, since 2021, he has been a key documentarian of the “Traditional Folk Costume” project. His photography for the three-volume “Book of the Year” illustrates the costume complexes of 28 municipalities, preserving the soul of folk art. This cycle has been showcased at the “Russia” international forum in Moscow and the “Beautiful Rus” competition by the Ministry of Culture.

International Exhibitions and Global Impact

The reach of his work is truly global. His flagship project, “Our Athos”, has seen approximately 180 exhibitions worldwide, traveling to Germany, Italy, France, Great Britain, Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic, and beyond.

A milestone in his career occurred in 2016, when His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia led the opening ceremony of Asimis’s exhibition, “Under the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos,” at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, celebrating 1,000 years of Russian presence in Agio Oros. His contributions have been recognized with high honors, including the Medal of Holy Prince Oleg of Bryansk (1st Degree) and numerous governmental certificates.

A Legacy of Charity and Education

In alignment with the spiritual values of Agio Oros, all of Kostas Asimis’s exhibition and filming projects are conducted on a charitable basis. He has donated vast portions of his archive to museums and cultural institutions across the Donetsk People’s Republic, Bryansk, and Siberia. He also actively supports humanitarian efforts, delivering photographs of icons and shrines to the front lines to provide spiritual strength.

Currently residing in Russia, Kostas Asimis continues his work under the blessing of Archimandrite Evlogy, Abbot of the Panteleimon Monastery. He is presently developing a major photo collection and the “Our Athos” trilogy of miniatures, ensuring that the timeless light and traditions of Agio Oros continue to inspire the world.
